In 1968, AT&T first reserved the digits "9-1-1" nationwide for emergency use. According to the National Emergency Number Association, nearly 93% of the population of the United States (and 96% of the geography) is now covered by some type of 911 service.
Ninety-five percent of this coverage is called Enhanced 911. This service automatically identifies the name, address, and telephone number of the calling location,2
helping EMS personnel reach the victim as quickly as possible.
